FIFA World Cup events programme in Munich

The World Cup in Germany is getting ever closer and growing ever bigger with more facts, dates and events linked to this sporting extravaganza. Of course, the World Cup is not just the events on Germany's football pitches.
In Munich alone a massive programme of events is planned before the first ball has been kicked – to help you organise your diary we have included a list of events being held in Munich over the coming months.

    14.03.- 07.05.2006: André Heller's Football Globe on the Marienplatz
    Level one of the touring exhibition: The Development of Football
    Level two: virtual penatlties and guess the results from previous World Cups
    Evening: Round table discussions with footballers, writers, musicians, politicians and scientists amongst others

    31.03.- 10.09.2006: Interactive exhibition- “Fair Play – more than just football“ In the Munich Musuem of Childood and Youth (the central themes are play, sport, fun and the social aspects of ball games)

    19.05.- 03.09.2006: Football: “Football: One game – Different worlds“
    Football as a unique source of fascination: From Brazil to Japan, from the Cameroons to Ukraine, from Mexico and the USA to Germany, England or Italy. The exhibition im Munich's City Museum ( Stadtmuseum ) offers an ethnological insight into the major and minor stages for the worldwide phenomenon , providing a lively impression of the cultural and global diversity of football. Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 10.00 - 8.00

    28.05.- 09.07.2006: Photo exhibition, “Football- the world language”
    The excitement of the game conveyed in photographs by renowned photographers including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Abbas, Martin Parr or Herbert List with the human being is at the centre of this travelling exhibition in the Goethe-Institut in the Staatliches Museum für Völkerkunde: Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday: 9.30 - 17.15.

    13 May 2006: “A heart is not a football”
    In the Munich Kammerspielen (Berliner Theatre group);
    Precis: It is to be the biggest game ever, a fantastic game. Everybody is waiting eagerly. Drums are drumming, cameras are rolling, the giant screens are ready, but then the impossible happens: the ball has disappeared.

    01.06.- 11.06.2006: Final stages of the International Streetfootball League
    32 multicultural teams from Germany play 32 qualfied teams from cities in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America; two age groups: Under 16s und Under 21s;;
    Central theme of this global get-together: Promoting communication between individual cultural and ethnic groups on a sporting and social basis. Venue: Odeonsplatz and Marienhof; Patron: Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn

    02.06.- 09.07.: “Open game” exhibition
    The Town Hall gallery provides twenty young designers from the worlds of graphics, product design, fashion, textiles, photography, the web film and sound.

    06 June 2006: FIFA-Congress in International Congress Centre (ICM-Messe)
    The international football federation FIFA will hold its annual congress in Hall 14, the biggest hall in the ICM, with 1,500 participants

    06 June, 20.30: Classical Open-Air concert: “3 orchestras and stars”
    The Bavarian State Orchestra led by Zubin Mehta, the Munich Philharmonic conducted by Christian Thielemann and the Bavarian Radios Symphoniy Orchestra with Mariss Jansons; Tenor Placido Domingo, the soprano Diana Damrau, the pianist Lang Lang, plus a surprise guest from the Pop world are the stars of the evening; Finale: Communal singing of stadium anthems “You’ll never walk alone” and “We are the champions” in the Olympic Stadium

    08 June: Brazilian samba dancers from a Samba school in Brazil
    During the morning 200 Brazilian samba dancers will perform their fantastic routine on Leopoldstraße

    08 June, 21.00: Gilberto Gil concert in the Olympic Stadium
    Gilberto Gil: Brazil's Minister of Culture and musician (musical direction- bossa nova mixed with reggae and rock’n’roll)

    From 09 June: Airport in World Cup fever
    In MAC (Munich Airport Center) there is a stand for 1,000 spectators in front of a giant LED screen and a football pitch has been laid out

    09 June- 09 July: Public Viewing and fan village in the Olympiapark
    Live broadcasts of World Cup matches on a 60 square metre giant screen, , national and international music groups, national broadcasters ARD and ZDF roadshows, Bayern 3 comperes the programme of events, Kids festival, Hands on event with Adidas

    09 June: 16.30 Opening ceremony in the Allianz Arena

    From 18.00 the official opening match between Germany and Costa Rica

    02 July, 16.00 - 1.00: World premiere: “Long Night of Sport”“
    Alongside the fun and entertainment the programme of events includes courses to get involved, as tasters and familiarisation: Various Munich swimming pools are turned into indoor water parks with romantic, feel good, activity and sport

    Olympiapark: Wide range of team and beach sports
    Englischer Garten: Courses on yoga, walking, running, Tai Chi and Qui Gong
    Leopoldstraße: a mile of fun and sport

    rices: €10 (concessions €7) guarantees admission to all participating venues and includes use of the local public transport system

    03.07 - 07.07.: Grand World Finals of the Jetix Kids Cup 2006
    Girls and boys under 13 from 16 countries and three continents compete for their trophies at the biggest ever, worldwide, media company football tournament. The Jetix Kids Cup to promote Fair Play, cultural exchange and an active lifestyle are being held for the seventh time in 2006
